City and Color (a.k.a. singer-songwriter Dallas Green) have released an emotional new song, “Meant To Be,” the first new City and Color song since their 2019 album. medicine for loneliness.
As the press release for the new single explains, the single is Green’s response to a life-altering and painful loss. In September 2019, he revealed that his best friend, City and Color’s longtime producer Karl Bareham drowned while swimming off Australia’s Gold Coast while the band was taking a break during their Australian tour.

Green then has to identify his friend’s body in the morgue, leaving him with a chilling experience.
“It was the most difficult moment of my life. It changed me forever,” he said.
Upon returning home to Canada from the tour, Green was still emotionally distraught, overwhelmed and struggling when the global pandemic erupted.
Green had no intention of writing about the loss when he began to deal with it.
One day, suddenly, the melody follows the line “The sun kept rising”. Green wrote it down and left.
“Writing ‘Meant To Be’ turned out to be a much-needed pure and cathartic experience for Greene,” said the release. “This song is a deep, resonant, beautiful, poignant, fiery elegy.”
