Carbon Monoxide – The Silent Killer, The Canadian Business Journal

TORONTO, ON, November 1, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Ontario’s annual Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week begins today. About 65% of all CO injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in the home, and most, if not all, are preventable. As a leading cause of unintentional poisoning, CO accidents continue to create a substantial demand for health services and an economic impact of approximately $2.6 billion annually.1.

As Carbon Monoxide Week unfolds, safety experts from the Technical Standards and Safety Administration (TSSA) talk about preventative measures to prevent CO accidents at home.

“CO poses a serious hazard, but residents can reduce potential harm by properly installing fuel-burning appliances, having them inspected annually by a TSSA-registered contractor, and installing working CO alarms. It can be essentially eliminated,” said Sam Sadeghi, TSSA Director of Fuel Safety.

Take action. Consider it safe.

  • Have all fuel-burning equipment inspected annually through the services of a TSSA-registered fuel contractor

– Use the Find A Registered Contractor Tool at cosafety.ca to find a TSSA Registered Contractor near you.

  • Install a certified CO alarm in your home, test it regularly, and replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

TSSA continues to partner with local fire and emergency services and other safety-minded organizations to provide vital CO safety information to residents of communities throughout Ontario.
