Squall advisory issued for Calgary and surrounding areas

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a squall warning for Calgary and surrounding areas. This is because a severe cold front is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds.

The Federal Meteorological Service issued a warning just before 12:30pm on Sunday, informing drivers of possible whiteout conditions on many roads in southern Alberta.

“Squalls change weather conditions significantly. It is common for clear skies to turn into heavy snowfall within just a few kilometers,” reads the warning. “Sudden changes in weather can make travel dangerous. Visibility can drop significantly and suddenly to near zero.”

The ECCC says a Snow Squall Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a “short but intense” burst of heavy snowfall.

While most of southeastern Alberta is on alert for a squall, a snow warning is in effect for southwestern Alberta, with up to 20 centimeters of snow expected overnight between Fort McLeod and Pincher Creek. I’m here.

Calgary can expect temperatures to hover around minus 15 degrees all week long, with wind chills reaching minus 20 degrees. Winds and rain are expected Sunday night through Monday, with more snow Monday and Wednesday.
