Disabled driver found passed out with baby in car in Nanaimo

A woman faces drivability charges after she was found passed out at the wheel of a car with an infant in it.

The Nanaimo RCMP was alerted by the Oceanside RCMP to monitor a Ford pickup truck that was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run collision early on Nov. 17, according to a police press release. 30:00 am in the Nanaimo North Town Center parking lot. The car’s engine was still running, but the police were unable to wake the woman after screaming and knocking on the window.

With the assistance of BC Ambulance Services and the Nanaimo Fire and Rescue Team, the woman was awakened and, “to ensure there were no medical problems,” she and her child were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for evaluation. .

“Cops discovered a strong odor of liquor from her breath, which was grounds for pursuing a driving disorder,” the release said.

The father picked up the child from the hospital and the mother was taken to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment to provide two breath samples, 2.5 times the legal limit, police said.

The 35-year-old driver was given a 90-day driving ban and her car was impounded for 24 hours. She was notified to appear in Nanaimo District Court at a later date.

Reserve Const said, “This incident is disturbing on many levels, but it goes without saying that we are glad that no child was injured.”
