North Okanagan Sleigh Theater “Lean on Caravan Wonders”

It’s a Christmas staple that families know and love, but instead of George Bailey and Bedford Falls, it’s Georgia Brathwaite, the fields and woods of the North Okanagan countryside, and Eight Horse Sleighs.

Tickets are on sale now to experience “The Wonderful,” Luke Reese’s contemporary retelling of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” at Caravan Farm Theater from December 6-31. Created with a winter sleigh ride premiere in mind, The Wonderful brings Frank Capra’s iconic 1946 film to modern-day small-town Canada, brought to life by Ethiopian-Canadian actor Helen Billay. She plays an inspired young black woman in the role of Bailey.

Caravan’s artistic director, Esther Schuck, said, “Taking this classic story one step further, we explore what happens when some of the pressures our protagonists experience come from being a racial minority within their community. “Throughout the story, Georgia reflects on her life and the impact it has had on the lives of those around her, and the story of the black experience in a small town unfolds.”

And while it’s an important story that sparks meaningful conversation, Reece says The Wonderful is about finding joy in everyone.

“When you’re making a production for Caravan Farm Theater, you have to be careful that the audience is distracted by the horses,” Reese says. “A lot of the winter sleigh ride shows are about catching up with people over cider by the fire. ”

As the cast and crew prepare to bring this future holiday season favorite to the Caravan stage, Reese says the team has already experienced the magic of this classic story together.

“We read the novella together, and people got emotional because the lessons sounded true,” Reese said. “It’s a desire to make an impact on the world around us, and not just go through life without any consequences. This story is a reminder that everything you do matters.” increase.”
