Verified Fake Twitter Accounts Overtaking Platforms

Shortly after Musk launched its Twitter Blue premium subscription service, which granted a blue-checked “verified” label to anyone willing to pay $8 USD per month ($9.99 in Canada), a number of impersonated accounts began to appear.

There are now two categories of “blue checks” and they look the same. One includes accounts that were verified prior to Musk taking the helm and were verified as “notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.”The other shows that the account is subscribed to his Twitter Blue

From fake accounts impersonating Ontario Premier Doug Ford and tweeting jokes about keeping sick children out of his cabin, to accounts impersonating pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. Tweet that insulin is freewith Twitter users mocking the platform’s newest features, it was an open-for-all atmosphere.

On Thursday, Elon Musk tweeted that parody accounts must include the word “parody” in their name, not just a bio.

“More precisely, an account that is doing parody impersonation.

On Friday, Twitter Blue’s sign-up was disabled due to an influx of fake accounts.

Below are some of the tweets showing fake accounts hijacking the platform. Some accounts take several days to be deleted by Twitter.
