Working with LEN, a national non-profit organization is working to make London a ‘living city’ through initiatives.
“Green infrastructure is a way to make cities work like natural systems,” explains Living Cities Program Manager Christine Mettler. “Nature provides many services. When we build cities, we lose the natural vegetation, harden the surface and lose the natural soil, and many of those services are lost.
“Green infrastructure is a way to protect the nature that already exists and to reintroduce it into the urban landscape.”
The Living Cities project team recently released the Pathways to Living Cities Framework, which documents how cities around the world are progressing with green infrastructure.
Pathways are also being developed in Lethbridge, Alberta; Hamilton, Dieppe, NJ; and St. John, NJ.
“We are active in five different communities across the country and work closely with our local partners,” says Mettler.
“We are just in the process of putting things together and making some suggestions on how the city can continue the good job of protecting what we have gotten. And I really think that nature can be used wisely to make our communities better and provide more services, and in fact it’s far more cost-effective than cement, thick pipes, and tearing down streets. higher.”
LEN executive director Marianne Griffiths said Living Cities Canada will allow the network to “build on this work by identifying what more London can do to support green infrastructure.” said.
“We look forward to deepening this commitment by raising awareness and engaging community members in green infrastructure projects on the ground,” said Griffith.
