World Junior: Sexual harassment prevention training is required

Host states for upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships are requiring Hockey Canada to sign anti-harassment policies and oversee training to prevent sexual assault and harassment.

The governments of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have confirmed they have asked the sports’ national governing bodies to ensure all staff and players receive training before the tournament begins on December 26.

Hockey Canada announced in July that all national team players, coaches and staff will receive training on sexual assault and consent.

In an email, the organization said last month it had also adopted a universal code of conduct that all players and staff must sign, adding that any violation could lead to a lifetime ban from the program. .

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said Hockey Canada is currently reviewing terms as part of an agreement with his province and expects to hear back in the next few days.

New Brunswick says it is also discussing ways to raise money from raffle ticket sales to support organizations working to prevent sexual violence in sports.
