Escaping ostrich spotted in southern Alberta town prompts Mounty response

About 20 ostriches descended on the streets of Tabor, Alberta on Thursday, prompting local cavalry to help capture the birds.

Destiny Nanakewetung, a convenience store worker in a small town about 230 kilometers southeast of Calgary, spotted an RCMP vehicle driving past an ostrich during a break.

She recorded a video and posted it on social media. In the video, a man can be seen leaning out of the RCMP cruiser’s window and trying to grab a bird.

“At first I thought I was seeing something … I heard sirens and I looked over and saw an ostrich. There is no way this is happening now,” she said.

“It was a sight to behold, that’s for sure.”

The bird in the video is one of about 20 ostriches, said RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Troy Savinkoff. The birds had escaped from the enclosure and officers were helping the owners to retrieve the flock.

Savinkov said there were multiple reports of ostriches on Highway 36 and Township Road 94 roads, which broke in around 8 a.m.

“The trending photo depicts an RCMP officer driving with the ostrich’s real owner on the passenger side, trying to catch the ostrich using the technology seen. ” he said.

“Several ostriches have been successfully captured, and we now have a few more to support their owners and continue the capture of the rest.”

Unfortunately, one ostrich was hit by a car and died, he said.

Taber’s RCMP responds to reports of free-ranging cattle and horses “with considerable frequency,” Savinkov said.

“Ostriches are certainly something we don’t know very well, and we can confirm that the particular investigator who received the initial report did not expect to be chasing an ostrich during that shift.”
