On Friday night, the legendary folk musician issued a rare public statement apologizing for using machines to write duplicate signatures on hand-sold artwork and books.

Dylan explained that he had been using automatic pen technology since 2019 due to a “bad case of dizziness” that continued during the pandemic.

“In order to make these signing sessions possible, a crew of five would need to work closely with me and provide me with the safety and security to complete what I needed while the virus was raging. I couldn’t find a viable way to do it,” he explained. “So during the pandemic I couldn’t sign anything and vertigo didn’t help.”

Despite being convinced that automatic pen use was “always” done, Dylan said, “It was an error of judgment that I used the machine, and I want to correct it immediately. I am Simon & Schuster and mine.” We are working with our gallery partners to do just that.”

The artist did not share any further details on how the situation will be remedied or whether refunds will be issued to purchasers.
