Millrock Receives First Mineralogical Positive Results From Alaska’s Nikolai (Ni-Cu-Co-PGE) Project, The Canadian Business Journal

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Sept. 29, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Millrock Resources Inc. (TSX-V: MRO) (“Millrock”) announced that it has completed a mineralogical evaluation of a historic drill core from Upper Eureka. We are pleased to report the positive initial results obtained. Nickel (Ni) – Copper (Cu) – Cobalt (Co) – Platinum Group Element (PGE) Zone (“UEZ”) and Core Eureka Zone (“CEZ”) of the wholly owned Nikolai Project to host prospects. The Nikolai Project is located within Alaska’s Delta Mining District, approximately 130 kilometers by road south of Delta Junction and approximately 280 kilometers southeast of Fairbanks. Eurekazone is a disseminated Ni-Cu-Co-PGE initially discovered by his INCO subsidiary and further expanded by Pure Nickel Inc., as reported in press releases from 2007 to 2014. Consists of mineralization.

Mineralogical assessment highlights include:

  • 94% of the nickel in the CEZ is found in nickel sulfide (pentlandite) and nickel alloy minerals.
  • 72% of the copper in the CEZ is found in copper sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcosite).
  • 80% of the nickel in the UEZ is found in nickel sulfide (pentlandite) and nickel alloy minerals.
  • 75% of the copper in the UEZ is found in copper sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcosite).

Millrock President and CEO Gregory Beischer commented: “This is an encouraging result! For large tonnage low-grade deposits, it is important to fully understand the potential recoveries of valuable metals. It shows a mineral form that allows for strong recovery with common processing methods.”

Methodology – metal content
Two composite samples from Hall FL-003 were made for UEZ and CEZ. Each composite consisted of six quarter-core sample intervals spread across the mineralized zone. In 1997 he used historical analysis of studies conducted by INCO to calculate the expected metal content of each composite sample (Table 1). Historical recording and sampling of INCO drill cores was made under the direct supervision of Gregory Beischer, who is responsible for this disclosure. Historical assays were performed at Chemex, Inc., Reno, NV. The chemical analysis of the composites for this study was completed prior to the mineralogical studies and verified the results of previous analyzes completed by INCO (Table 1). The concentrations measured by INCO and Millrock were found to be similar.

Methodology Mineralogical studies
Mineral processing work was completed by Bureau Veritas Metallurgical Laboratories in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Each composite was ground to approximately 125 µm according to standard grind calibration procedures. The ground composite was sized using a wet screen and cyclone sizer and sized into four fractions for chemical and QEMSCAN analyses. QEMSCAN particle mineral analysis was performed on each size fraction of the sized composites to determine nickel and copper behavior and fragmentation properties.

Early mineralogical findings
Nickel sulfide and nickel alloys accounted for approximately 94% of the total nickel in the CEZ composite samples (only 5.1% of the total nickel in the silicate). Pentrandite was the major nickel-bearing sulfide, accounting for approximately 92% of the total nickel in the CEZ composites. The pentlandite content was measured at 0.68 wt%. The remaining potentially recoverable nickel was in nickel alloys and nickel metal, accounting for about 2% of total nickel. The CEZ is high in sulfur (1.32%) and rich in pyrrhotite (1.78% by weight). Linkages between pentlandite and pyrotite are rarely observed, favoring the separation of pentlandite from pyrotite.

Nickel sulfide and nickel alloys accounted for approximately 80% of total nickel in the UEZ composite samples (18.9% of total nickel in silicate). Pentrandite was the major nickel-bearing sulfide, accounting for approximately 64% of the total nickel in the CEZ composites. The pentlandite content was measured at 0.44 wt%. The remaining potentially recoverable nickel was in the form of nickel alloys and nickel metal, accounting for about 16% of total nickel. UEZ has lower sulfur (0.49%). This is probably due to the depletion of pyrrhotite. These results are summarized in Table 2 below.

Table 2. Summary of Ni-Fe-S analysis of Eurekazone composites

nickel deportment CEZ UEZ
Ni-Fe sulfide 92.2 % 64.1 %
Ni-Fe alloy 2.1 % 16.7 %
sulfide hydroxide 0.6 % 0.3 %
silicate (olivine) 5.1 % 18.9 %
Total potentially recoverable nickel 94.3 % 80.8 %

% S by chemical analysis 1.32 % 0.49 %
% Pentlandite by weight 0.68 % 0.44 %
Weight % Pyrhotite 1.78 % 0.55 %

Copper sulfide accounted for approximately 71% to 75% of the total copper within the CEZ and UEZ composites. Chalcopyrite is the major copper sulfide, accounting for approximately 67% to 71% of the copper in the composite sample. Bornite, chalcosite, cuprite, malachite and azurite were also included in the composite sample. The remaining copper (about 24% to 28%) was contained in valerite (Cu-Fe-Mg sulfate). The copper sulfide content was 0.31 wt% for CEZ and 0.14 wt% for UEZ. These results are summarized in Table 3 below.

Table 3. Summary of reports on Cu-Fe-S in Eurekazone composites

copper grade CEZ UEZ
chalcopyrite 66.8 % 70.7 %
Bornite 1.0 % 1.7 %
chalcosite/corbelite 3.5 % 2.9 %

An additional composite sample from the Lower Eureka Zone (“LEZ”) was submitted to Bureau Veritas and an identical mineral analysis was completed. The results of the LEZ analysis were reported in a September 26, 2022 Millrock press release.
