Why not grate an apple into your overnight oats?
Overnight oats are one of the great classic breakfast hacks. worldyou probably already i know this. you canDrink them with almond milk or real milk, with or without yogurt, with raisins and nuts, or pumpkin puree and chia seeds. have you ever thought about
you heard me right latticeWe’re not talking about chopped and cooked apples (although those are great too).in short Fresh apples chopped just before ripening mix with milk and oatsA great way to add fruit to your day. The texture blends perfectly with the softness and sweetness of cold oats.
I didn’t discover this myself. I got the idea from someone else. Acquired from a long-deceased Swiss doctor and raw food lover Maximilian Bircher-BennerHe ran a sanatorium and published the recipe for a standard breakfast there. It is a fruit porridge that has become known as “Bircher muesli”. (Although he does not claim to have invented the recipe, Hiking in the Alps. )
of original rrecipe Each serving should contain 2-3 apples, grated whole (core and all), and mixed with a few tablespoons of soaked oats, sweetened condensed milk, nuts of your choice, and lemon juice. Mix it up. It wasn’t oatmeal—It’s like an apple meal.
These days If you google “Bircher muesli” you’ll find all sorts of recipes that combine grated apple with what we traditionally think of as muesli or overnight oats. By the way, pears work just as well as apples, and the recipe is perfect for consuming apples that are still edible. However, it was a little too soft to eat with your hands.

how to make Bircher Muesli Overnight Oats
Here’s how I made mine:
- half a grated apple or pear (I keep the skin on, but stop grating when it hits the core)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup milk of your choice or plant-based milk
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup dried fruit of your choice
- a pinch of honey
- Sprinkle liberally with nuts (sliced almonds or chopped walnuts are my favorites)
Place all ingredients in a 16 oz Mason jar, or plastic soup containersRefrigerate for at least 20 minutes, preferably overnight. This recipe uses half an apple, so double the amount. Feel free to play around with the materials and proportions.
