As the cost of flights continues to rise, consumers are looking for ways to reduce the total cost of airfare. One charge for you can If you play it correctly, avoid paying for the honor of bringing your luggage to their plane. Each airline has its own set of rules and definitions for baggage. What is technically carry-on baggage? What are personal belongings? Which is free and which do I have to pay?

Knowing what to expect in advance eliminates the need to pay a (possibly unreasonable) fee when you appear at the gate. The breakdown of the largest airlines in the country and the policies regarding carry-on baggage and personal belongings are as follows.

Airlines that allow carry-on baggage and personal belongings

American Airlines. American Airlines will not charge for carry-on baggage or personal belongings as long as they meet the specified dimensions. Carry-on baggage should not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches and personal belongings should fit under the seat in front of you (18 x 14 x 8 inches). Diaper bags, soft side coolers for breast milk, strollers, medical or mobile devices are not considered personal belongings.

Delta Air Lines.. At Delta, you can bring your carry-on baggage and personal belongings for free with the purchase of a ticket. Carry-on baggage must not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inch dimensions, but is not subject to weight restrictions (if the flight is a domestic flight). Approved personal belongings include purses, briefcases, camera bags, laptop bags, or diaper bags. Also, umbrellas and duty-free items purchased at the terminal are not considered personal belongings. You can even bring them on an airplane without hassle.

Hawaiian Airlines. Not only do you get free rays with Hawaiian Airlines, but you don’t have to pay for carry-on baggage. Hawaiian Airlines rules are a bit stricter than some free carry-on baggage, with a weight limit of 25 pounds, but standard 22 x 14 x 9 inch dimensional rules apply. If your carry-on baggage is a musical instrument, Hawaiian Airlines allows exceptions to this rule as long as it fits in the overhead compartment. For personal items, Hawaiian Airlines allows purses, briefcases, laptop bags, or small backpacks, but they must fit under your front seat.

Southwest Airlines.. If you’re flying with a lot of luggage, Southwest Airlines is the best bet. Not only do you not charge for carry-on baggage and personal belongings, but you can also check the two bags for free (if the length, width and height do not exceed 50 pounds or a cumulative 62 inches). Southwest Airlines has posted 24 x 16 x 10 inch dimensional rules for carry-on baggage larger than the corresponding one. For personal belongings, it must fit the dimensions of 16.25 x 13.5 x 8 inches.

Airlines that only allow personal belongings

United Airlines. If you purchased a Basic Economy ticket on United Airlines, you can only carry one personal item on board. Your personal item must fit dimensions of 9 x 10 x 17 inches. If you bring carry-on baggage, you will have to pay a $ 25 fee. Bag dimensions should not exceed 22x14x9 inches.

JetBlue Airlines. If you use JetBlue, be prepared to pack as much luggage as you can into your items. Otherwise, it will cost you money. JetBlue charges $ 65 to bring carry-on baggage to the gate at the base fare, but the airline does not allocate carry-on baggage space to customers at the base fare and will continue to be checked.

Spirit Airlines. If you’re on Spirit Airlines, make sure all ducks are in line before you board the plane. You can bring your personal belongings for free, but carry-on baggage costs $ 26 to $ 65, depending on how and when you pay the fare. Personal items should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inch dimensions.

Allegiant Air. If you’re flying in Allegiant with carry-on baggage, be prepared to pay for that luxury. Allegiant Airlines charges $ 35 per bag and an additional charge for heavy bags (up to $ 75). Carry-on baggage must not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inch dimensions. If you do not exceed it, you will be charged an “airport bag fee” of $ 50.
