HALIFAX – More than 86,000 homes and businesses in Nova Scotia were in darkness this morning after a severe storm hit the area.
A belt of heavy rain and strong southerly winds pulled down power lines from Yarmouth, New South Wales, to Cape Breton before they could move.
Major blackouts were reported in the communities of Amherst, Bridgewater, Dartmouth, Port Hawkesbury, Truro and Stellarton.
Just before 9am, more than 8,000 homes and businesses lost power in PEI, and 7,000 NB Power customers in central and southwestern New Brunswick were in darkness.
Halifax Stanfield International Airport recorded gusts of 92 km/h, with winds picking up in parts of Cape Breton, with gusts reaching 107 km/h at Escassoni First Nation and 103 km/h at Grand Etain. reached. .
Nova Scotia Power activated its emergency operations center at 8am.
Nova Scotia Power spokesperson Sean Borden said in a statement:
“More than 300 field workers are restoring power for customers statewide.”
