Quebec needs more nurses to answer 811 calls, health minister says

Quebec’s health minister said on Thursday that the situation in Quebec’s health system “will continue to be difficult” over the next few weeks.

Christian Dubé called on nurses to come and help out at Info-Santé, the state’s 811 health hotline. There were over 10,000 calls on Wednesday.

“811 (line) is working very well, but we are short of staff to answer the calls,” Dube told reporters at the state legislature.

“We are inviting retired nurses and nurses working in private institutions to help us in the coming weeks. We can use up to 5,000 nurses,” he added. .

Dube said the number of flu cases in the state continues to rise. He urged Quebec citizens to get vaccinated, saying the vaccine is now free.

He also urged parents to keep their children home if they have flu-like symptoms.

During the questioning period, liberal health commentator André Fortin criticized Duvet’s poor results, saying the emergency room was overrun.

“In repentance this morning, Mr. Chairman, emergency room occupancy is 181%,” he said. “In Sorrell, 194%. In Buckingham, 208%. In Montlaurier, 300% are in the emergency room.”

According to Fortin, up to 1,500 Quebecers leave hospital emergency rooms every day without seeing a doctor.

“It’s a misstep by the health minister. You don’t let people go without care,” he said.
