How to tell if you have a severe sore throat

Sore throat is fairly common and you usually don’t have to worry about anything. However, in some cases, it can point out something quite serious. For example, when I was 17, I had a very dramatic tonsillectomy after a sore throat for nearly a year. Treatment at home could not correct the cause of the need for two separate hospitalizations and treatment. So how do you know that your sore throat is too long? Or when it’s serious?

What is a normal sore throat?

Of course, the problem can be difficult to know if you’re a cold-related one that resolves spontaneously in a few days or requires more serious intervention, and you probably don’t want to go feel a scratch. When to see a doctor

Neck and jaw pain, gland pain and swelling, red tonsils, and muffled voice are not reasons for emergency treatment, but these are that is:

• Dysphagia
• Abnormal drool (may indicate that it cannot be swallowed, especially in children)
• Sore throat lasting more than a week
• Difficult to open mouth
• Joint pain
• Ear pain
• rash
• Fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit
• Saliva or sputum blood
• Frequent and recurring sore throat
• Neck lump
• Hoarseness lasting more than 2 weeks
• Swelling of the face and neck

How long does the sore throat last?

Fever and joint pain are easy to identify when they occur, but sore throats are so common that you may not start counting the number of days you have a fever. You really should, because the duration of a sore throat can help you (well, your doctor) understand what is causing it.
