For most gamers, the PS5 is an easy setup. When you plug it into your TV, determine if you have a 1080p or 4K display, and Presto: play modern games at your fingertips. But for those of us who play games on 1440p monitors instead of TVs, we may be dissatisfied with Sony’s lack of resolution support. Now, pop the champagne and charge the DualShocks: 1440p is finally available on PS5..

Why 1440p is important on PS5

As far as movies and TV are concerned, imports come in two resolutions, 1080p and 4K. The former shows “Full HD” resolution and the latter has four times as many pixels (many pixels). However, games treat these resolutions differently. Sure, there are a lot of 1080p and 4K games out there, but 1440p “intermediate” resolution is often required.

If you want to play the game in the highest quality possible, 4K shy may sound like a downgrade. In fact, this is a great resolution for the game. As Lifehacker’s Brendan Hesse explains, 1440p offers twice as many pixels as 1080p, but requires a cheaper monitor than spending on a 4K display. 4K has twice as many pixels as 1440p and four times as many as 1080p, but it’s not so obvious, especially if you’re playing a game near your monitor.

1440p is usually a consideration for PC gamers who weigh the cost and performance of their hardware, but not so important for console players. For one thing, many choose to play on traditionally offered TVs. 1080p or 4K option only. Another reason is that 1440p wasn’t an option, at least on the PlayStation. Sony made a leap from the previous generation 1080p to 4K, focused on enhancing the PS5’s 4K games and focusing on offering different resolutions.

1440p benefits both sides no matter what game you play. It looks great if the game provides native 1440p output. However, even if only 4K options are offered, there are benefits to downscaling to 1440p, such as antialiasing (the process of removing jagged edges from in-game elements). However, one drawback at this time is that PS5 variable refresh rates are not supported in 1440p. Hopefully it will be fixed by Sony in a future update.

PS5 1440p is currently in beta testing

Other drawbacks are: Sony has finally added 1440p as an option, but it is currently only available for PS5 beta testers. Ultimately, this feature will be rolled out to all PS5 players. However, at this time, it is limited to users who are registered with this trial software.

Unlike, for example Apple iOS 16 Beta, Sony beta version has not been released. In other words, you cannot register the PS5 in the program and install the software right away. However, it is not completely closed. Sony allows anyone to sign up for Beta Spot, provided that the following conditions are met:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • You must live in one of the following regions or countries: United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany
  • You must have a valid PSN account in good condition with your current email address
  • You must provide Sony Interactive Entertainment (“SIE”) with complete and accurate feedback regarding your use of the Beta Software in the manner and format required by SIE.

Once selected, you can register your device and try out future features such as 1440p games early.
