Roaming IoT Connections to Generate 1,100 Petabytes Globally by 2027, Study Reveals
A new study from Juniper shows that the amount of global data generated by roaming IoT connections will grow from 86 petabytes in 2022 to 1,100 petabytes in 2027. That represents enough data to stream 165 million hours of his 4K video from streaming platforms like Netflix. .
This significant growth will be fueled by the end of 3G networks, which will drive the adoption of low-power cellular networks.
Juniper Research has found that low-power wide-area networks offer a low-cost option for established carrier-driven cellular networks such as 4G and 5G.
A roaming IoT connection uses wireless services outside the registered operator’s network. Access connections from other cellular providers.
“U.S. carriers must adopt the Billing & Charging Evolution protocol to accurately identify IoT traffic based on network technology,” said study author Scarlett Woodford. “Failure to do so risks losing revenue if profitable 5G roaming IoT traffic is misidentified as low-value connections.”
