Crowds return for first full anniversary ceremony since pandemic began

Neil was drafted in 1951 during the Korean War, but was never sent to South Korea. He joined his two tours in Europe in his 1950s and his 60s, and in Egypt he spent a year. He honors his memorial day each year at the National War Memorial.

“I’ve always appreciated the act of remembering. We’ve all lost friends to different events, so I honor them,” he said. We used to march here all the time, and unfortunately he passed away, so I remember him.”

Thousands flocked to Elgin Street for the ceremony, which included a 21-gun salute, wreath laying, and a flyby of vintage military aircraft, including a CF-18 Hornet, a Mustang P-51, and a Hawker Hurricane. And the Supermarine Spitfire Mk XII.

The ceremony marked the 80th anniversary of the ill-fated Dieppe raid on August 19, 1942, an Allied amphibious attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. Of his 4,963 Canadians who embarked on the operation, 916 were killed and 1,946 were taken prisoner.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has attended a series of summits abroad, did not attend the ceremony. Dignitaries at the ceremony included Governor Mary Simon and National Silver Cross Mother Candy Gref. Passed through Kabul on 29 October 2011.

He waited Friday morning in the lobby of his Laurier Fairmont Chateau as veterans prepared to march with his friend Mike his Whitty. Mike Whitty has worked for 36 years and has worked throughout Canada, Germany, the Benelux countries (Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg) and Bosnia.
