The Taliban flogged three women and nine men in front of hundreds of spectators at a state sports stadium on Wednesday.
The governor’s office of the province of Logar, south of the capital Kabul, invited “honored scholars, mujahideen, elders, tribal leaders and locals” to the stadium in the town of Puru Alam in Logar. Invitations to the 9am event were extended through social media.
After being convicted in a local theft and adultery court, those punished received between 21 and 39 lashes each, they said, asking not to be identified because they weren’t allowed to share details with the media. A governor’s office official said.

Officials said hundreds of people took part in the flogging and were banned from taking photos or videos.
The resumption of practice underscored the Taliban’s intention to adhere to a strict interpretation of Islamic law, namely Sharia.
“Sharia law is the only solution to Afghanistan’s problems and must be enforced,” Logar deputy governor Enayatullah Shuja later said in a statement about the flogging.
Such public floggings, as well as public executions and stonings for purported crimes, were common during the first period of Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001, and during the U.S.-led invasion. extremists were driven out.
After 20 years of rioting, the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. This coincides with the withdrawal of US and other foreign forces from the country.
Shortly after its second occupation of the country, the Taliban pledged to be more moderate and to recognize the rights of women and minorities. Instead, it restricts rights and freedoms, including banning girls’ education after sixth grade.

The first confirmed public flogging since last year’s Taliban takeover took place on November 11, when 19 men and women were each subjected to 39 lashes on suspicion of theft, adultery and running away from home.
The former rebels have struggled to make the transition from war to rule amid a sluggish economy and withheld official recognition from the international community.
