It begins with a nightmare: Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) dreams of Midian. Midian, like a satanic carnival, has two completely sick cartwheels. Caught in a serial killer’s conspiracy, Boone soon discovers a psychedelic underground city (technically, under a cemetery). In fact, it’s very lifelike and populated by creatures as diverse as they are Boone thought he imagined. In Clive Barker’s best style, the denizens of Midian may be monsters, but they aren’t monsters.They’ve created a safe space in a world that fears them, and Boone, at first horrified, discovers that they have more in common than he ever dreamed possible.Everything in this underrated queer fable works by dark dream logic, even if the characters aren’t literally asleep.
