‘Surreal’: Young Mi’kmaw singer’s talk wins Music Nova Scotia Awards
Abegweit First Nation’s 16-year-old singer-songwriter Deedee Austin swept the Music Nova Scotia Awards.
Austin won two awards: Indigenous Artist of the Year and New Recording Artist of the Year. She was also nominated for two other.
“(It’s) very surreal,” she said.
Austin started making music when he was 11 and released his first single at 14. He released his first EP a year later and has now released three singles.
“I’ve always loved music and it made me very happy,” Austin said on Global News’ Morning Show.
“You don’t think anything of it. For example, I just brought home two awards.”
her latest single buried truthA music video was released last month, reflecting the lives of indigenous peoples robbed by boarding schools.
“What inspired me to write buried truth My great-grandmother was in boarding school. I learned all about unmarked graves,” Austin said.
“I was like, it doesn’t fit in my book anymore. So I took it to the studio and laid it down…I’m really happy with the results.”
Austin said music is her way of escaping what’s going on in the world.
“It’s really special to put your own story and people’s stories into a song.”
The music video, which features Austin playing a blazing piano in front of the Truro library, was produced with the help of several people in the NS music industry, volunteers, and her dad.
Austin said he thinks it’s been well received “about how heavy the topic is.”

Nova Scotia Music Week 2022 took place in Sydney over the weekend with performances by a number of local artists.
Austin played twice at the Showcase on Saturday. She also had time to attend other people’s performances.
“We love reuniting and events like Nova Scotia Music Week bring us together.”
Austin said he hopes to release a new album in the near future and plans to reunite with fellow musicians at the East Coast Music Awards in the spring.
