Twitter Adds ‘Official’ Mark to Large Verified Accounts – National

Twitter announced Tuesday that it will add a gray “official” label to some high-profile accounts to indicate they are genuine.

The site’s current system of using what is known as a “blue check” to verify account authenticity will soon be discontinued for users who do not pay a monthly fee. Checkmark will be available on an as-yet-unannounced date to anyone willing to pay the $7.99 monthly subscription. Experts have expressed concern that making checkmarks available to everyone for a fee could lead to identity theft and the spread of misinformation and fraud. Esther Crawford, a Twitter employee working on a verification overhaul, said on Twitter Tuesday that the “Official” label will be added to “selected accounts” when the new system launches.

“Not all previously verified accounts will get an ‘official’ label, and labels cannot be purchased. Deadline.”

Recipients of the label include government officials, commercial enterprises, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures, Crawford said.

There are approximately 423,000 verified accounts under our submission system. Many of them belong to celebrities, corporations, politicians, and the press.
