According to the report, Toronto and Montreal are the main hubs for auto thefts in Canada. The people behind the annual survey say criminal gangs are stealing more and more cars with the intention of exporting them internationally. Montreal is a “major” shipping port for stolen vehicles, the report’s authors said.
“Auto theft not only costs Canadians millions of dollars each year, but the proceeds of this illegal activity fund organized crime and terrorism at home and abroad,” said a study by the Equité Association. Bryan Gast, vice president of services, said in the news. release.
Trends noted by the association include thieves finding ways to circumvent anti-theft technology. According to reports, auto thieves can exploit some of this technology through relay attacks, also known as keyless theft. This uses a device to amplify the signal emitted by your key fob in your home so that you can start your car’s engine.
Another tactic is to clone the vehicle’s keys using the onboard diagnostic port.
