The Canadian Business Journal’s lJmuiden Works Names Hatch to Team to Deliver Green Steel Hydrogen Route for Tata Steel

Illmuiden, the Netherlands, Sept. 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Tata Steel has announced that Hatch has joined its team to provide a hydrogen route to produce green steel at the company’s Illmuiden plant in the Netherlands. Hatch was selected to provide engineering for the reduction electric furnace (REF) package. Combined with a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, this package enables the production of raw steel using hydrogen.

The Hydrogen Route project is part of Tata Steel’s commitment to producing carbon-free steel by 2045. This iron ore is directly reduced using natural gas to gradually increase the amount of hydrogen, then melted and refined in a large and efficient rectangular electric smelter.

“We recently signed a future agreement with two ministries and the province of North Holland. We are replacing blast furnaces with modern technologies that use hydrogen or gas instead of coal,” said Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland. said Mr.

Due to the use of renewable electricity and green hydrogen, the CO2 emissions associated with steel production are significantly lower than steel produced from the blast furnace process route. Scrap can also be recycled through new processes, further improving circularity. Importantly, the DRI + electric furnace route will enable the production of the same high quality steel that Tata Steel is recognized for.

“Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from steel production are essential to mitigating the impacts of climate change. A transition to low-carbon steel production will enable the building of a sustainable steel industry. We look forward to working with Tata Steel on this exciting project and congratulate them on their leadership in accelerating this change,” said Joe Lombard, Global Managing Director of Metals at Hatch. .

Tata Steel engaged Hatch to develop the basic engineering of the DRI reduction refining complex using Hatch’s electric furnace technology, CRISP+, and to design and supply the process equipment within the complex. Hatch’s range broadly includes feed mixing, hot mix transfer, primary and secondary offgas systems, electric furnaces, and slag granulation.

“Already several years ago, Hatch saw the potential to reduce electric furnace technology for steelmaking and invested accordingly in developing, testing and commercializing the technology. It is great to see this foresight now bearing fruit, as it is the key to
