Texas Attorney Charged with Spiking Abortion Pills in Wife’s Drink – National

A Texas attorney is indicted after prosecutors alleged he spiked an abortion-inducing drug into his wife’s drink because he was unhappy with her pregnancy. The pair recently separated after 11 years of marriage.

Despite suspected poisoning that began in March, local TV station KTRK reported that the baby was born a little premature but healthy.

Mason Haring, founder of a law firm specializing in oil and gas, is the first person in Harris County, Texas, to be charged with assault-induced abortion. He criminalized abortion in his state. The charge, which also includes assaulting a pregnant person, could carry him from two years to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to US$10,000.

According to court documents obtained by the Associated Press and KTRK, the couple told him that Haring’s wife was pregnant when they were attending marriage counseling in February. Haring of has expressed frustration at the news.

In March, prosecutors said Haring brought his wife’s breakfast to a house he didn’t live in. During her visit, he began lecturing her on her hydration and offered her her water.

“The petitioner drank from the cup and stopped to take a breath. She noticed that the water appeared cloudy,” the court documents read. “She questioned the defendant about this. He said maybe the cup was dirty or the pipe was dirty.”

After she finished drinking, Haring took the cup and walked away, according to Anthony Osso, the assistant district attorney in charge of the case, who spoke to KTRK. Within 30 minutes, she said, the woman was very unwell and she had to go to the emergency room.

According to Osso, after the mysterious incident, based on his reaction to the pregnancy, Haring’s wife became suspicious of him and decided to install cameras in her home.

Herring’s wife says her husband brought her a drink six times over the course of a month, but she didn’t drink it and instead kept it as evidence.

In one case, “Complainant said defendant gave her a bottle of orange juice and said she saw the bottle’s seal broken,” the document read in court said.

At one point, the woman’s surveillance camera caught Haring removing a bag of powder from his pocket and putting it in a drink he gave his wife.

“She observed the defendant clearing up trucks and taking trash to the curb. She said this was out of character for the defendant because he doesn’t do chores around the house. When the defendant left, the plaintiff went to see what was in the trash,” the court documents read.

There, Herring’s wife finds an opened blister pack of a Mexican drug called Cyrax, which contains misoprostol, a drug used to induce abortions. contacted the police and Herring was arrested.

According to Osso, six water samples stored by the woman were later tested in a laboratory in Oklahoma, and at least two of them contained misoprostol.

“It’s manipulative,” Osso said. “Pre-meditation. What Mr. Herring claims to have done, which I believe the evidence supports, is a rather heinous act.”

It’s unclear how Haring got his prescription, but NPR reports that health officials at the Texas-Mexico border have turned to unregulated pharmacies in Mexico in the aftermath of the state’s anti-abortion law. It reported that it is seeing an increase in women getting abortion pills.

Court records show that Haring was released from prison on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 2nd. Neither Haring nor his lawyers have commented on the situation.

A spokeswoman for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

If convicted, Herring faces two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
