Steve Jobs: Apple co-founder’s sandals up for auction

The suede leather Birkenstock sandals that were personally owned and worn by famous Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are going up for auction, with prices expected to range between US$60,000 and US$80,000.

The shoes also come with a book by Jean Pigozzi called “The 213 Most Important Men in Life” with candid photos of celebrities like Jobs, Mick Jagger and Elon Musk.

Jobs, who died in 2011 from complications of pancreatic cancer, wore the shoes in the 1970s and ’80s, according to a Julian’s auction description.

This item is part of Bonhams’ Science and Technology auction, featuring physical items of technology and documents relating to key moments and individuals in the history of technology.

As of 11:30 am on Friday, the winning bid was US$22,500, with only two bidders. Bidding starts at $15,000.

Jobs’ first wife, Chrisann Brennan, told Vogue:

According to Julien’s Auction website, Jobs wore the sandals at “pivotal moments” in Apple’s history, including when he shared plans for the first Apple Computer with co-founder Steve Wozniak.

This isn’t the first time Jobs’ sandals have drawn attention. In 2017, the shoe was presented at several international exhibitions in Italy, Germany and New York, and from 2020 to 2022 he can be seen at the Wüttenberg Historical Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

“The sandals have been used a lot but still look intact,” the auction website description reads. “Each sandal features the original Birkenstock adjustable buckle and the Birkenstock engraving on the inner edge of the suede his leather foot his strap. The cork and jute footbed features what Steve has his Jobs footsteps shaped over the years.”

This was after Jobs’ 1987 Macintosh computer went on sale for an estimated price of $200,000 to $300,000. The 20MB hard his drive contained tasks such as the marketing project Jobs was working on at the time.

Many other items up for auction were related to Jobs, including business cards from when he worked for NeXT, the startup he founded in 1985 after leaving Apple. The card sold for his US$4,080 and included a personal collection of items from his office at NeXT. This included several magazines and a videotape of highlights of his 1990 presentation by Jobs, which sold for US$5,100.
