Severe weather adds to WestJet flight delays at Kelowna Airport-Okanagan

After a system-wide outage at WestJet caused flight delays and cancellations throughout the weekend, another winter explosion in the Okanagan continues to land passengers at Kelowna International Airport once again.

WestJet said it had to cancel more than 200 flights over the weekend due to technical failures, prompting some Kelowna travelers to rush home.

“My 90-year-old mother-in-law lives with us, so now I have to take care of her and her livestock for two more days. I also have to find another hotel to stay. No,” said Cori Landers of Campbell River, British Columbia.

“We have to go home.”

Stuck WestJet passengers say the company offers little support.

“He didn’t offer any compensation,” said service agent Landels. “He basically said there’s nothing they can do, so he has to accept this.”

“We see poor visibility, strong northerly winds and low ceilings,” says Elchitz. “What it does is make it very difficult for aircraft to land in Kelowna because of the local weather.”

On the other hand, a man from the United States who is about to fly to Toronto to visit his family is a little disappointed that his flight was delayed due to weather, but he is trying to stay positive.

“After spending four years in Toronto, I was due to meet my sister and return to the US in Washington DC,” said Ramin Azadi, a stranded traveler. “Let’s see what the weather is like.”

YLW apologized for the delay and said it hopes business will return to normal in the coming days.
