Ryan Reynolds wants to buy Ottawa Senators: ‘It’s very expensive’

After conquering the football world, Ryan Reynolds set his sights on hockey.

Amidst a flurry of speculation, the Canadian actor appeared on “The Tonight Show” Monday night to confirm his interest in buying the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.

“Yes, it’s true,” he told host Jimmy Fallon.

He laughed and added, “I really need a partner with money.”

Reynolds, now owner of Welsh football club Wrexham, bought it with his friend and fellow actor Rob McElhenney.

Buying an NHL team, however, requires going bigger by gathering and leading a consortium of interested investors.

Despite being from Vancouver, Reynolds showed his love for the Canadian capital.

“I love Ottawa. I grew up in Vancouver, where I always have a heart, but I also grew up in Ottawa,” he explained. “I spent a long time in Vanier, a small town just outside Ottawa.”

The Senator currently has no owners and is led by a board following the death of former owner Eugene Melnyk in December 2021.

Plans have also surfaced to move the team to a new arena that could be built at LeBreton Flats in central Ottawa. The Melnyk estate says it will only sell to buyers interested in keeping the team within city limits.

At a press conference on Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman spoke of Reynolds’ interest in buying the team.

“He said last night on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that he’s very interested and needs a Sugar Mummy or Sugar Daddy with lots of money to help him. “I think it was exactly his words that I was quoting. Listen, whatever is going to attract a fan base and bring a lot of attention to the franchise and the team.” Plus, he’s a very popular and well-respected person.”

He added: “The formal process has not yet begun. He said one thing that has been made perfectly clear is that it depends on whether the club stays in Ottawa and hopefully moves downtown to Lebreton. The club has made it perfectly clear.”

Melnyk originally bought the Senators for $92 million in 2003, when the team was facing possible bankruptcy.
