Northern Ontario Official Refuses to Fly Pride Flag, Alleging it Represents a Minority

The recent decision by the northern Ontario community of East Ferris, situated near North Bay, to refrain from flying the Pride flag has stirred discontent among certain individuals.

In a series of three separate votes, the small council voted 3-2 against the motion to fly the Pride flag.

Mayor Pauline Rochefort, while personally supportive of flying the Pride flag, stands by the council’s decision, emphasizing the community’s commitment to inclusiveness and tolerance. She maintains that East Ferris is a welcoming place for all citizens, despite differing perspectives on the matter.

Councillor Terry Kelly explained his dissenting vote, citing his belief that the Pride flag symbolizes only a small segment of Canada’s population. He referred to it as a “splinter group” and questioned its appropriateness for municipal representation.

Deputy Mayor Lauren Rooyakkers took offense at Kelly’s characterization, asserting her affiliation with the LGBTQ+ community and advocating for their recognition and acceptance. She emphasized that support for LGBTQ+ individuals extends beyond a minority, encompassing a larger group within the community.

Lynne Gouliquer, an associate professor at Laurentian University specializing in 2SLGBTQI+ issues, expressed disappointment in East Ferris’ decision, viewing it as a setback for the community and a concerning precedent. She cautioned against marginalizing minority groups and urged allies to speak out in support of diversity and acceptance.

Proposals for compromise, such as flying the Pride flag for a single day instead of a whole month, were not entertained by the council.

Mayor Rochefort remains optimistic that the issue will be revisited in future council sessions.

The decision in East Ferris has sparked discussions about inclusion, diversity, and the role of municipalities in representing marginalized communities.
