New collaboration between Extract Energy and Hamilton community companies harvests ‘free’ energy, The Canadian Business Journal

CAMBRIDGE, ON, Nov. 9, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — This week, Extract Energy kicks off a pilot project with Hamilton Community Enterprise (HCE), designed to harvest vast untapped clean power sources We have demonstrated new technology that has been

Extract Energy’s Heat Engine captures excess hydrothermal energy from the City of Hamilton’s district heating and cooling plant and converts it into grid-quality electricity.

Extract Energy CEO Ibraheem Khan said: “This collaboration demonstrates how our innovative technology can be scaled to save costs and reduce our carbon footprint.”

Waste heat provides a free energy source. However, due to the relatively low temperature of most waste heat, it often makes no economic sense to recover it using conventional techniques. Extract Energy has developed a solution that turns that inefficiency into an opportunity.

At the heart of the heat engine, a nickel-titanium-based shape-memory alloy expands and contracts with heat, creating motion that can be converted into zero-emission, grid-quality electricity. And because the engine integrates seamlessly with most equipment, it can be installed in hours without disrupting operations.

HCE President and CEO Jeffrey Cowan said: “His Heat Engine pilot at Extract Energy provides an opportunity to further demonstrate our environmental leadership and help drive new low-carbon innovations.”

The heat engine was developed with funding and support from Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Ontario Center of Innovation, Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada, and MaRS. In 2020, Extract Energy tested a smaller version at Calgary’s Last Spike Brewery. The HCE is now the first in a series of pilot tests designed to validate engine performance at scale.

“Ultimately, we aim to scale energy from kilowatts to megawatts,” says Khan. Nearly 65% of the world’s energy is now lost as waste heat, he notes. “Harnessing such a vast energy source could reduce millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year and create an impact of the scale needed to address the climate crisis.”
