Morgan Evans Says His Breakup Song ‘Over for You’ Is ‘Catharsis’ Amid Kelsea Ballerini’s Divorce

ET’s Rachel Smith spoke with the 37-year-old singer at the 2022 CMA Awards on Wednesday to reveal how his new track ‘Over for You’ helped him get through his divorce from Kelsea Ballerini. Did.

“It was a really tough time and writing songs helped me solve a lot of things,” he explained. “It was very vulnerable to share it, but it was also cathartic at the same time.”

Evans first debuted the song in September at the CMC Rocks QLD Festival in Queensland, Australia. It was the fan reaction to that performance that inspired him to release the track.

“I just closed my eyes and sang it. At the time, I felt like I needed to say something,” Evans told ET of his first performance of the song. But then my phone calls and social media and the conversations I was having went from things like ‘great show, man’ and ‘come back to Kentucky soon’ to something really meaningful. rice field. ”

“[People would say,] “Thank you for writing the song. It’s helped me get through my divorce,” or “I wish I had these words to describe how I feel when I go through a divorce,” he continued. I just started having meaningful interactions with them, and I knew I had to record them properly and share them like this.”

Ballerini, 29, announced her divorce in August, about five years after she and Evans tied the knot.

“This very difficult decision is the result of a journey of love, growth and hard work that has finally come to an end,” she wrote in part. I am very grateful for my long-term marriage to and am hopeful for the next season.”

Shortly thereafter, Evans said: I wish it wasn’t, but unfortunately it isn’t. ”

Then, in October, Ballerini spoke about the split again, this time on “CBS Morning,” while promoting the album. Planned change.

“I think when you have a big life decision like that, it’s not a sudden decision and a lot of things happen before it becomes public,” she said. I’m on a journey of healing, and a big part of that is showing up for this album, and showing up for myself like never before.”

“I’m a peacemaker. I’m a people pleaser, so it’s really hard for me to do anything that goes against those two things and I’m really proud of myself,” she added. . “It’s not chaotic, it’s not precarious, it just didn’t work out. It’s a story that’s hard to understand when you’re like that.

Later that month, multiple outlets reported that the former couple, who had a prenuptial agreement, had reached a divorce settlement.
