Ken Sim sworn in as Vancouver’s new mayor, promises to help

VANCOUVER – Ken Sim is officially Vancouver’s new mayor and has promised to set the tone for cooperation despite his ABC Vancouver party’s overwhelming majority on the city council.

Sim and the new council were sworn in at the Orpheum Theatre, where he also asked the federal and state governments for help in dealing with the opioid crisis.

Sim made history by defeating incumbent Kennedy Stewart in the October election to become the city’s first Chinese-Canadian mayor.

All seven candidates for Shim’s center-right ABC Vancouver Party won seats on the 10-member council, laying the groundwork for a more united municipal government than Stewart’s.

ABC Vancouver’s Slate says it will tackle housing affordability by speeding up the permitting process and will hire an additional 100 police officers and 100 mental health nurses to address public safety concerns. He was elected on the basis of promise.

In his inaugural address, Shim called on other departments of government to help tackle Vancouver’s opioid crisis, saying the city alone cannot solve the situation.
