John McAfee was no ordinary man.
He established himself as a leader in the cybersecurity industry by founding one of the largest antivirus companies in history.
But what happened next is what really put him in the public eye.
The British-born American software magnate worked at NASA, Lockheed Martin, and Xerox before releasing McAfee VirusScan in 1987.
VirusScan has created a multi-billion dollar industry in the computer world. He eventually sold the platform to tech giant Intel for over $7.6 billion in 2011.
To date, there are 500 million users of programs bearing his name.

McAfee has been on the run from US authorities for a long time, spending part of it on a megayacht. Both the New York cryptocurrency fraud case and the Tennessee tax evasion case led to his indictment.
After his $100 million fortune collapsed to less than $4 million as a result of the 2008 financial crisis, he became a “person of interest” in a murder investigation in Belize.
McAfee spent a considerable amount of time in Belize. He fled when authorities came looking for him to inquire about a murder in his neighborhood in 2012. They concluded that he was not a suspect.
The antivirus pioneer claims to have fathered at least 47 children in 2018. He then returned to the United States and ran for president twice (2016 and he in 2020).
Enthusiastic visionary and cybersecurity legend
John McAfee was not your stereotypical tech entrepreneur. He was impatient and careless and often got into some kind of trouble.
He committed suicide in a Barcelona prison last June after a high court in Spain approved extradition to the United States on charges of tax evasion.
According to McAfee’s attorney, Javier Villalba, he spent nine months in prison before committing suicide by hanging.
Despite John McAfee’s right to appeal his sentence, Villalba did not survive long in the prison facility.
John McAfee has written several books on yoga and spirituality.
In 2012, he told Wired that his father was an alcoholic and was abusive to his mother.

According to Wired and other reports, when McAfee was 15, his father committed suicide.
John met his wife, Janice McAfee, and was recruited as a prostitute while hiding from the authorities.

“Don’t let John’s story, his work, and his death be forgotten. Help pressure the Spanish authorities to take action to free his body.”

A little over a year after his death, and truly stranger than fiction, McAfee’s story has been turned into a Netflix documentary called Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee.
