Indigenous Veterans Day: Canadian Students Honor Veterans

Schools across Canada, including Quebec’s Mary Gardner School in Chateauguay on Montreal’s South Shore, held special ceremonies Tuesday to mark Indigenous Veterans Day.

“It’s about remembering those who fought in the war,” said sophomore Grace Sutton.

Ray Dear was among the group of veterans in attendance. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces from his 1978 to his 1979, then joined the U.S. Armed Forces where he served for 21 years until his retirement.

Deere, president of Mohawk Branch 219 in Kanawake, Quebec, said the day is a day to commemorate all former and current service veterans.

“The slogan for Remembrance Day is ‘Remember’. When they returned from the war, our Aboriginal veterans were forgotten. There was no,” says Deer. “Many of them suffered alone. did.”

Mohawk student Cameron Nolan was one of several students who laid a wreath at the ceremony.

“I know a family who participated in the war, so it means a lot to me. Just being here makes me feel good. It means a lot,” he said. “I have nothing but gratitude for them. That’s the least I can do.”
