Alberta’s Connect Care Expands with Launch 5
Calgary-Alberta Health Services (AHS) completed its largest Connect Care launch to date, involving over 25,000 staff and physicians at 135 AHS sites. This initiative will support standardized care across AHS, making all medical records from AHS and its subsidiaries and partners accessible through a common local information system. It also provides common decision support for clinicians.
Launch 5 was the first to involve sites and programs in all five AHS zones. This launch included AHS’ Calgary, North and Central Zone acute and long-term care sites and his two major state programs, Cancer Care Alberta and Alberta Kidney Care.

Nearly 75,000 staff, physicians and other healthcare providers are now using Connect Care to improve patient care in the North, Edmonton, Central, Calgary and South Zones.
“The expansion of Connect Care is an important step in health care for the state, providing a central access point to patient information across AHS,” said Mauro Chies, interim president and CEO of AHS (pictured). ) said.
“Eventually, medical information will be accessible from any AHS location in the state, giving medical teams a more complete patient health history, access to consistent information on best practices, and maintaining information privacy. It will make resources more readily available while working, and it will make it easier for care teams to communicate with patients and other teams.”

“We have safeguards and protocols in place to protect patients during launch, including standard practice of reducing surgical activity at the launch site during the transition period, ensuring that the care we provide is never compromised. Patients may see AHS staff taking a little extra time during launch to complete charting and other tasks. We appreciate the patience of the public during this time.”
Starting in November 2019, there will be nine Connect Cares until the final implementation in the fall of 2024. When fully implemented, 150,000 staff and physicians will use his Connect Care at 682 locations in Alberta.
