Manipulative people tend to fall into one of two categories: Karen Donaldson, an expert in communication and body language. First, some people know what they are doing is wrong, but they don’t care as long as they get what they want. And some are convinced that they are right and that their actions are justified.

But how do we tell each other apart?of entrepreneur interview, Donaldson recommends using what she calls the “triangle” method. Here’s what you should know:

How to tell if someone is lying to you

Paying attention to the following three areas can help you determine if the other person is being honest with you.

the flow of their speech

Watch your pace when people are talking. Usually when we are telling the truth our words flow naturally. We are not thinking things. I know what happened because it happened.

“People’s speech patterns start to go crazy, and if you pause for too long, you’ll have a lot of ideas and then stop for a moment. I have.” Donaldson speaks to entrepreneurs.

head movements and facial expressions

Even people who are good at changing the way they speak may tell you that they are lying by their head movements or facial expressions. This includes the following examples:

  • a person suddenly glanced up or down
  • People who nod when they say they didn’t do anything or shake their heads when they say they did something
  • Fold your lips briefly, then rub them together (as if you were applying lip balm)

the rest of the body language

Not surprisingly, lying stresses people out. When someone is not honest with us, they will engage in self-calming behaviors.

  • scratching or rubbing the neck
  • touch the tip of one’s nose after saying something
  • Excessive use of non-dominant hand

“When we’re stressed, we touch ourselves too much because it’s a nurturing gesture from childhood.” Donaldson speaks to entrepreneurs“Think about it. When your parent or guardian is soothing you, they’re rubbing your hands and rubbing your back. We do that to ourselves.”
