911 calldown to select Telus landlines in Hamilton and GTA

Police in Hamilton have warned that some landline users may not be able to dial 911 right now due to a power outage that has also affected parts of the Greater Toronto area.

Hamilton Police issued a warning on Twitter early Thursday morning that people with Telus landlines no longer have the ability to dial 911.

“According to TELUS, TELUS landlines, whether voice over or hardware IP, currently do not have the ability to call 911,” the police service said in a tweet. “We have been advised that this is a widespread blackout.”

According to the company’s website, the outage was active after 1:00 a.m. and is currently affecting Chatham, Durham, Gananoque, Guelph, Halton, Hamilton, Niagara and Peel.

“Due to an issue with our landline 911 service, you may not be able to call 911 from your landline,” the company said in an online notice.

Police said they were informed that Telus was working to resolve the matter.

“A service technician was involved and an investigation is ongoing,” the company said.

The cause of the outage was not immediately announced.
