The father-daughter duo has been attending Kelowna Rockets games for the past 18 years

Sports and traditions, whether played or watched, go hand in hand and continue through the ages.

For the past 18 years, Bart Evans, 91, and his daughter Sandy, 70, have been to Kelowna Rockets games together.

The Evans family moved to Kelowna in 1969, but didn’t take an interest in the Rockets’ game until Sandy’s job presented him with an opportunity.

“I have a lot of people who come to my office regularly and I grew from there,” Sandy told Capital News.

Sandi got his dad to watch the game during the 2004-05 season and they both liked it so much that they decided to buy season tickets. Season tickets were hard to come by due to the Rockets’ success at the time, but they waited and he got a ticket for 15 years.

Bart, now 91, sits on an easy-access ticket in Section 116, so he can still go to the game.

“It’s really important to him, especially during the winter months to be able to go out and he totally enjoys it,” Sandy said. “With snow on the ground, he can’t play golf.”

Bart goes to Rockets games during the winter and plays golf at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club during the summer. He has been a member of it for over 50 years.

Over the years, the two have seen a lot of hockey with their ups and downs, but being connected to a team means a lot, regardless of how they’re doing.

“I think it’s a combination of watching the young fellows grow and being able to see their careers expand into the NHL,” Sandy said.

Sandy also said it was difficult to pick a favorite player over the last 18 years, as roster turnover can change dramatically each season.

In all the hockey they’ve seen, they’ve seen a lot of big-name players come to town, and they announced that on Tuesday night (Nov. Sandy praised Rockets forward Andrew Crystal.

“It was interesting [seeing Bedard]but it was really fun to see Andrew Crystal do as well as he did,” Sandy said. It’s like being there.”
