The automotive industry’s lengthiest gestation period has culminated in the debut of an entirely fresh iteration of the Toyota 4Runner—an event marking the first major update since the introduction of the fifth generation back in 2010, a whopping 14 years ago. Bearing a striking resemblance to the 2024 Tacoma with its boxed design, the sixth-generation 4Runner ventures into contemporary realms, equipped with much-needed technological advancements, more efficient engine options (including a hybrid variant), and enhanced safety features. Despite these modernizations, the 4Runner remains true to its renowned reputation for traversing some of the planet’s harshest terrains without succumbing to breakdowns or getting stranded.
Built upon the same boxed ladder frame that underpins various Toyota vehicles, including the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, and Lexus GX, the 2025 4Runner retains its body-on-frame SUV architecture and will be manufactured in Tahara, Japan. Notable upgrades include an increased towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, expanding trim options to nine variants, featuring newcomers like the Trailhunter and Platinum models. Additionally, the beloved power sliding rear glass window remains intact, with the added option of a power tailgate for the first time. The cargo area’s side glass pays homage to the original 1984 4Runner with its rounded top.
Inside the cabin, the 4Runner transitions from the fifth generation’s noir aesthetic to a vibrant, technologically advanced environment. Higher trim levels boast a 14-inch multimedia display paired with a 12.3-inch digital cluster, while base models feature an eight-inch primary screen and a seven-inch gauge cluster. The interior layout exudes simplicity and functionality, featuring prominent knobs for climate control and a central radio knob. Moreover, the inclusion of two-tone leather upholstery and LED lighting elevates the 4Runner’s interior into the realm of luxury. Notably, the TRD Pro interior maintains a predominantly black theme, exuding a rugged yet sophisticated ambiance.
Under the hood, the 4Runner is powered by two four-cylinder engine options, both mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base turbo four-cylinder generates 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, while the optional I-Force Max hybrid powertrain, available on select trims, produces a remarkable 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque—the highest power output ever seen in a 4Runner. The hybrid engine, featuring a 48-hp electric motor and a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery, delivers impressive performance while enhancing fuel efficiency.
Safety features receive a significant upgrade with the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, offering advanced driver-assist technologies such as pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and more.
