ZEBEDEE Launches NBD, a Non-Profit Organization for Open Source Bitcoin Development – Bitcoin Magazine
Bitcoin gaming company ZEBEDEE has announced No Big Deal (NDB), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing open source development of Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, according to a release sent to Bitcoin Magazine.
ZEBEDEE co-founder and CTO Andre Neves said: “Just write the code, give it to the world, and do whatever they want with it.”
Today, NBD already contributes to many projects. For example, the code for Open Bitcoin Wallet, provided by a non-profit, is a sophisticated non-custodial Lightning wallet that can support hosted channels.
Additionally, both the Core Lightning (CLN) plugin, Poncho, and the daemon that enables node hosted channel support known as Cliche, have been contributed by NBD.
In addition, the nonprofit also contributed to Immortan, a Lightning network library that provides plug-and-play developer functionality, and LN Metrics, a data comparison tool for determining optimal Lightning nodes, also received contributions from NBD. I’m here.
“We have basically created a suite of tools for modern sovereigns, from the clients they use to set up their nodes to the wallets they use to manage their funds in a self-sovereign manner.” says Neves.
The company has contributed a lot to its hosted channel support and Lightning Network over the years. Hosted Channels eliminate the need to lock funds, make it easier to move funds between Lightnings, and are less capital intensive. The downside of locking funds is creating an apparent need for bitcoin reserves, which some users don’t have the liquidity to sustain.
An important thing to note about these particular contributions is that the continued expansion of hosted channel support and continued growth of the Lightning Network will eliminate the need for custodial services such as those offered by ZEBEDEE itself. That’s it.
“This opens the door for people running their own software, clients and infrastructure instead of using commercial services like ZEBEDEE,” reads the release. “But it’s like a bitcoin point, not a big deal.”
