A shooter opened fire at a Walmart in Virginia late Tuesday, killing six people, police said. The perpetrator also died.
Chesapeake stores are now safe and will likely be closed for several days pending an investigation, Officer Leo Kosinski said early Wednesday.
It was not clear who the shooter was or what his motives were.

In a statement posted to the city’s Twitter account, Mayor Rick W. West said, “We are devastated by the senseless violence that took place in our city late last night. Chesapeake is a tight-knit community. Yes, we are all shaken by this news.”
A database that tracks all mass murders in the United States since 2006, run by the Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University, has been particularly bad this year. , second only to 45 incidents in 2019 overall. The database defines genocide as at least four people dead, not including the killer.
The Walmart attack comes three days after one person opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five and injuring 17. ,Texas.

Tuesday’s shooting also sparked memories of another incident at Walmart in 2019. In the incident, the gunman, who police say was targeting Mexicans, opened fire on a store in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people.
Kosinski said he could not say how the shooter died, but he did not believe police opened fire.
The shooting apparently stopped when police arrived at the store in Chesapeake, Virginia’s second-largest city and bordering the seaside communities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Sentara Healthcare spokesman Mike Kafka said in a text message that five Walmart patients are being treated at Norfolk General Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately clear.
Walmart tweeted early Wednesday that it was “shocked by this tragic event.”
Senator Mark Warner tweeted, “Disgusted by reports of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Walmart in Chesapeake.”
State Senator Louise Lucas echoed Warner’s sentiment, tweeting, “I am truly heartbroken by America’s newest mass shooting at a Walmart in my neighborhood.”
