‘At least’ 15 people die of drug overdose in Toronto in 4 days

The Toronto Public Health Service (TPH) on Wednesday issued a drug alert after “at least” 15 people died after consuming an unregulated substance over four days.

According to the city’s health department, all of the fatal calls to Toronto’s emergency medical services for suspected opioids have occurred in the past four weeks.

Higher-than-normal concentrations of fentanyl were found in fentanyl substances, especially in the city’s downtown core, according to the Toronto Drug Testing Service.

Additionally, an increase in benzodiazepine-related drugs and the highly potent carfentanil in fentanyl samples was observed, also known as the Center for Drug Policy Evaluation.

A variety of substances have been implicated in fatal overdoses in “various neighborhoods” across Toronto, Public Health said.

“Fentanyl continues to appear in local drug supplies in a variety of colors with unpredictable potency and contamination,” TPH said in a Nov. 16 alert.

“More potent fentanyl combined with carfentanil and benzodiazepine-related drugs may increase the risk of overdose and may require additional support to arouse individuals experiencing an overdose. ”

People who use drugs are advised not to use drugs alone. Use monitored consumption services when possible. Scrutinize their supply. Check your drug content with your local drug testing service. And get naloxone.

Individuals who use drugs alone should consider asking someone to verify in person or by phone, calling the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677 (NORS), or discussing virtual overdose with a member of the community. You are expected to be connected.

“Always call 911 when someone is experiencing an overdose, especially if someone is not responding to naloxone,” says TPH.
