Wild horses set free in Southern Okanagan after fence illegally cut

Wild horses were spotted roaming again in the South Okanagan last week, with the Penticton Indian Band citing intentional cutting of fences as the cause.

PIB officials said they would install remote cameras and step up patrols after reports that part of the perimeter fence along the property had been tampered with.

“These illegal practices will continue into 2021 and 2022 and pose significant challenges for the management of free-roaming horses,” the PIB said in a statement. It’s a criminal activity you’re after.

“Anyone who knowingly commits these irresponsible acts and is caught on these PIB lands will be prosecuted accordingly.”

PIB continues to work with the Ministry of Transport and AIM Roads to ensure cattle guards and other potential access points are in good condition, he added.

Last weekend, Drive BC issued a wildlife advisory for wild horses roaming 1km south of Penticton.

Another related incident was also reported between Junction Highway 3A and Pineview Drive, 5 kilometers north of Okanagan Falls.

“These reckless and senseless (fencing cutting) activities expose the public and horses to unnecessary and unacceptable risks,” the PIB said.

They also say they are committed to finding a “cooperative solution” to the ongoing problem of wild horses roaming the area.

Anyone who witnessed the activity is asked to contact Joan Phillip, PIB Lands Manager, by calling 250-493-0048.
