Multiple Clashes Around GTA, 1 Killed

One person has been confirmed dead this morning amid a spate of clashes around the GTA, where Ontario police are warning people to be careful on the roads.

Around 11:45 pm on Wednesday night, paramedics were called to the southbound lane of Route 427 near Queen Elizabeth Way.

One person was taken to a trauma center in critical condition, while three others were taken to a local hospital in stable condition, according to the Toronto Ambulance Service.

OPP Sergeant Kelly Schmidt said a person taken by paramedics died early Thursday morning on his way to a hospital. OPP identified the deceased as a 32-year-old driver from Mississauga.

Schmidt said it happened when other vehicles tried to avoid the broken-down transport truck.

“Throughout the night, a transport truck broke down and blocked part of the lane,” Schmidt said. “Three other vehicles approached and I tried to avoid them, but I lost control.”

The crash occurred while the GTA was under winter travel advisories from Environment Canada due to high winds and snow.

After that, the GTA advisory ended. However, although there was not much snow, the amount of rain seemed to make driving difficult.

There were many other conflicts around GTA this morning.

Mr. Schmidt said the car had slammed into the back of a shipping truck on the westbound lane of Highway 401 just past Dixie Road in Mississauga. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, he said.

There have also been multiple crashes on Highway 401 west of Hurontario Avenue, Schmidt said.

“Again, with that wind and weather, be sure to pack your car away before heading out.
