When the Taurus meteor shower and the Leonid meteor shower can be seen in November

The night sky in November is the perfect treat for stargazers. There’s a full lunar eclipse, several meteor showers, and the best Uranus view of the year along the way. We’ve got all the details below so you can plan your sky-watching schedule and manage your expectations.

November 4-5: Taurid meteor shower

The Taurus Shower is an annual light show in which shooting stars are produced by dust from two separate sources: asteroid 2004 TG10 and comet 2P Enke. However, it is more impressive than it looks. A minor storm with 5-10 meteors per hour at its peak on November 4th, but the moon will be nearly full, so only the brightest meteors will be visible. Look to Taurus after midnight for the best shots of seeing some meteors. Many meteors appear to originate from it.

November 8: full moon and full moon

There will be a full moon around 6 am on November 8th. The November 2022 ‘Beaver Moon’ isn’t just a full moon. It’s a “blood moon”, a complete lunar eclipse where the shadow of the Earth appears to bathe the Moon in a rusty red color. The Blood Moon can be seen over most of North America and peaks around 6:00 AM, just as the Moon is about to set.

November 9: Bright Uranus

On November 9th, planet Uranus will be closest to Earth for the whole year, with its face fully illuminated by the Sun. Uranus is so large and bright at this time of year that people with good eyesight may be able to see it without binoculars or a telescope, even when the Moon is almost full. Look east around 2am on the 9th. A blue-green dot on Uranus should appear very close to the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus.

November 17-18: Leonid meteor shower

The Leonid meteor shower occurs between November 6th and 30th and can produce up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak. This year, it peaks on the night of November 17 and the morning of November 18, when the Earth passes through the middle of the dust trail left by Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Leonid meteors are bright enough that light from the Moon doesn’t drown out most of them. They are often colorful, sometimes unpredictable, and surprise us with their extraordinary shows.
