Abel offers pest-free Halloween tips, The Canadian Business Journal

TORONTO, Oct. 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Halloween is just around the corner. While it’s fun to see fake spiders, bats, and other spooky creatures decorating your home for the holidays, a real pest infestation can be quite terrifying.

“Halloween is about everything spooky and eerie, as long as it’s not real,” said John Abell, president of Abell Pest Control. “Once creatures like bats, mice, and spiders invade your home, it can be a real nightmare. We recommend that you take precautions against

Abel offers the following tips for a pest-free Halloween and fall season.

  • Check the stored decorations for creepy crawlers that may have nested in the past year.
  • Wait to carve a pumpkin. Pests such as rodents and insects enjoy eating pumpkins, especially if they are cut open to expose the fruit inside.
  • At dawn, don’t forget to bring the candy cauldron you left outside for the kids indoors. Store leftover candy in an airtight container.
  • Don’t let scary creatures in unless you have a little ghost or ghoul trick or treating you.
  • Remove piles of leaves around the house. Pests are always looking for safe places to hide and breed.
  • Seal all cracks and crevices around the foundation of your home. Mice, who often crave warmth, can squeeze through holes larger than 1/4 inch.
  • Examine any vents that lead to the outside of your home, such as your dryer vent. These are rodents’ favorite access points
  • Check the gap under the exterior door and install the door sweep to close it. Spiders can squeeze through gaps as thin as a sheet of paper.
  • Prune the branches and bushes that border the house. These wooden trails can provide a pest highway directly into your home.
