Two-Rivers Education Centre Margaret Smiley set to retire
Smiley wrapping up 46-year career in education
After 15 years of service to Fraser-Cascade School District 78, Two Rivers Education Centre (TREC) Margaret Smiley is set to retire effective Dec. 30.
Smiley began her 46 year-long career in education in 1978 as a junior and senior high mathematics teacher in Ontario and Alberta. She became head teacher at the Chilliwack Education Centre from 1986 to 1996 before moving on to lead the math department at Sardis Secondary until 2008.
Smiley also served as a course writer and editor for Open School B.C. and has been a long standing exam writer and marker for the province’s education ministry. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree in 2018.
“Margaret’s most significant impact has been on TREC students, staff and parents,” said SD78 Superintendent Balan Moorthy in a statement released Tuesday (Nov. 29). “Her passion for learning and commitment to creating a safe space for vulnerable learners will be her legacy in our district. Many students who did not succeed in the traditional school setting went on to graduate because Margaret believed in them.”
Hope-based TREC is a program for students grades 8 to 12 offering not only academic development both encouraging positive behaviour beyond the classroom.Students ay earn their B.C. Dogwood or Adult Dogwood certificate, and school-age students who have already graduated may take courses to upgrade or enhance their grades.
