Weird from the start: Brakovski’s OT goal gives Kraken a 9-8 win over Kings

LOS ANGELES — Andre Brachowski scored two goals, including an extra-time winner, as the Seattle Kraken defeated the Los Angeles Kings 9-8 on Tuesday night in their highest-scoring NHL game of the season.

Brakovski scored on a power play at 2:08 in the extra session to give Seattle its first six-game winning streak in franchise history.

“It turned out to be one of those games where the last shot wins, and that’s exactly what happened,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s better to be on the winning side and on its positive side, but it’s a crazy hockey game.”

Matty Beniers and Jared McCann each scored two goals, and the Kraken, playing in their second NHL season, set the team’s goalscoring record. Alex Wenberg, Daniel Spong and Oliver Björkstrand also scored, while Martin Jones made his 27th save.

Gabe Biraldi scored two goals for the Kings, but Cal Petersen allowed four of 16 shots after substituting Jonathan Quick early in the second period. Anze Kopiter, Viktor Arvidsson, Karl Grandstrom, Adrian Kempe, Sean Durge and Mikey Anderson also scored for Los Angeles.

Durge cut it to 8-7 with 8:16 left in the third period and Anderson tied it with 6:21 left.

Kings coach Todd McClellan said: “It’s been a very confusing night for all of us. “It’s really disappointing that we absolutely gave up nine goals. So it’s a massive mess for all of us right now, and we’d better get it sorted out soon.”

The Kings appeared poised to score in overtime when Trevor Moore played the puck in the offensive zone before Kempe took the bench, resulting in penalties for too many men on the ice. Brakovski fired a wrist shot from the right circle through traffic on the ensuing power play.

“I’ve got the puck in a good spot, and I’m going to take shots from there all day,” said Brakowski.

Despite winning his second multi-goal game in the last three games, Brakovski was not satisfied.

“It was a crazy night,” he said. “We were trading chances. There was a lot of sloppy play. I think we played really bad and so did they. Lucky they didn’t play well at all. was”

goal, goal, goal

Seattle tops the eight goals scored against San Jose last Wednesday. McCann likened the game to pound hockey growing up in Canada, noting similarities to junior hockey.

“It will be such a night,” he said. “It will be a lot of goals, a lot of offense. To get two points is very good.”

stay or go

Huxtle said he didn’t think about taking Jones, who won his 12th game in 18 games, matching his 25-game total in Philadelphia last season.

For the Kings, the decision to change goaltenders proved costly as Petersen blamed the score for putting the Kraken back in front.

Petersen had a blocker save on Spong’s shot, but he didn’t realize the puck was high in the air and landed on Crease at 7:27, rolling into the net.

Björkstrand then beat Pietersen with a wrist shot from a high slot under the crossbar to make it 7–5 midway through the interim period.

strange from the start

The first period was practically a game in itself, and after 20 minutes Kopiter scored with 16 seconds to make it a 3–3 draw. It was his 11th career goal in his first minute of the game, making Kopiter his sixth in NHL history. In four combined opportunities, per team he set the stage for two power plays in his goals. Kraken defenseman Justin Schultz scored his second assist in all three of his goals for the club, setting a franchise record for most assists in a period.

worthy of attention

Kings F Kevin Fiala had four assists and D Drew Doughty had three. … Kraken F Jordan Evere had 4 assists.
