“We want you to stay”: Canada opens the door to permanent residence for 90,000 international graduates and temporary workers in a one-time program

Canada is developing a one-time special immigration program to grant permanent residence to 90,000 recent international graduates and temporary foreign workers with work experience in important professions. I will.

International students will be eligible for the new program if they have graduated from or are currently employed in a higher education program within the last four years since January 2017. You do not have to be in a particular profession to meet the requirements.

The program covers temporary foreign workers with at least one year of work experience in one of 40 healthcare professions, and 95 other important jobs across a wide range of areas such as long-term care and food production and distribution. Is also open.

This limited-time immigration route will take effect on May 5th and will remain open until November 5th or until the target is reached.

“The pandemic sheds bright light on the incredible contributions of newcomers. These new policies help people in temporary positions plan their future in Canada and our economy. It will play an important role in the recovery and help us to recover better, “said Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino.

“Our message to them is simple. Your status may be temporary, but your contribution will last long — and we want you to stay.”

The Free Government plans to make migrants an important part of Canada’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery, with 401,000 permanent residents in 2021 after annual migrant intake fell 45.7% last year to just 185,130. Is standing up.

Intake of 90,000 under the new program will account for almost a quarter of this year’s overall immigration target.

The border remained closed to non-essential travel, and many immigrant candidates already granted permanent residence could not come to Canada.

It urged authorities to shift gear and focus more on future candidates who are already in Canada and would normally face a longer process to qualify.

In February, Ottawa frowned when it issued 27,332 invitations to promising candidates already living in the country. This is five times the previous high of 5,000.

Mendicino said these are unprecedented steps taken to create the “fastest and widest route” for permanent residence and to achieve the 2021 immigration level plan through a series of “wise choices”. Said.

“To move the economy forward and accelerate the recovery, we need workers with different skills in different areas of the economy,” he said.

“We value highly educated and highly skilled people, but we also need people working in the agricultural, trade and construction sectors who provide manual labor to build communities. We have been unable to provide these routes for too long. “

Of the 90,000 spots in the program, 20,000 are dedicated to temporary foreign workers in healthcare. 30,000 for other selected important professions; the remaining 40,000 are for international students who have graduated from a Canadian institution.

All candidates must be familiar with one of Canada’s official languages and meet general tolerance requirements. You must be allowed to work and work in Canada at the time you apply for qualification. Immigrants who have already lost their legal status are not eligible.

Three additional streams have also been created for French-speaking or bilingual candidates to promote the official language of Canada, with no intake cap.

According to Mendicino, the Immigration Bureau has recently hired an additional 62 police officers to increase processing power, and the new program will only accept online applications and allow staff to process remotely. Most of them are still working from home.

The processing of domestic and foreign immigrant applicants is not mutually exclusive, as Canada needs immigrants to meet the needs of the labor market and replenish the aging population, and authorities have applied for foreign applicants. Said to continue processing.

He said these special public policies would help essential temporary workers and international graduates take root in Canada and retain talented workers in need in the country.

“Imagine you were asked to bring in the most permanent residents in the history of the country. People could say” suspend immigrants. ” We said no because we believed we needed to keep the economy growing through immigration, “Mendicino said.

“Newcomers create jobs. They create growth. They give back to their community. They roll up their sleeves and invest in Canada, even if they don’t have permanent residency. They reflect Canada’s unique qualities, such as hard work, caring for each other, and compassion, so today’s announcement is so important. “
